The Tim Bourke clinic was a huge success!  Tim teaching style was encouraging and highly productive.  In only a few short days we gathered 10 horse and rider combinations.  3 of those were current POM students and 7 horses trailered in.

We need to thank our newest boarder, Tim Jones in many ways for making the event a success and giving Erin and Courtney the opportunity to train with Tim Bourke as well.

Based on the success of this event and the synergies between our teaching philosophies, we have decided to host Tim Bourke again on January 3rd.  The clinic is already half full.  So, get in two point position and register for your training session today.

I am currently writing you from my basement.  It’s my new office!  Major home improvements are in progress again this weekend.  In addition, I have been busy updating our website and well you will see below.

But, I have to thank you all for a very inspiring week of training (last week).  There were a number of light bulb moments and milestones which I will never forget.  Fabby, only 7 years old, gave Linda, two beautiful flying changes.  Jane expertly navigated Della for their first counter canter and flying change.  SJ started jumping and thinks it’s very hard work.  Julee and Parker started shoulder-in.  All of your lessons were a joy to teach.  Thank you for bringing such tremendous effort and enthusiasm to your rides!

Bold and expressive canter. Ines is safe and easy to manage for hacks, bathing, clipping, trailering, and vaccines.

La Sangria KLF
2006 15.3H Grey ANNCE Registered Andalusian Mare
Sangria is out of Guapa HA by Mulitiple-time National Champion Andalusian Stallion Santiago. At her first show Sangria earned an 8 for gaits and a 65% at Training Level, with glowing comments and adoration from the judge. Best suited to a riding and breeding home, Sangria has been prepared for sale with four months of professional training. Sangria is schooling First Level dressage, jumps, trail rides, and lunges. Having experienced an irregular training schedule for her earlier years, Sangria can be anxious and stubborn under saddle. With time and consistency, we hope Sangria’s talents are enjoyed and campaigned by a dedicated rider. In the barn and for handling Sangria is affectionate and well mannered. She is well acquainted with primping and braiding routines and enjoys the attention. Sangria has always been strong and healthy with excellent feet and no lameness issues. In preparation for sale, Sangria’s owner (and breeder) had a clinical pre-purchase and flexions completed by a performance veterinarian.

POM Staff Thank you!
Huge thanks to our amazing staff on their commitment to the care of POM horses.  Over the past several months we have worked hard to improve the chain of communication.  This month our efforts proved to be successful.  Our staff has smoothly navigated vacation coverage, weekly thunderstorms and tornado threats, new arrivals, and new equipment.  We can easily access the history of these changes in our barn log books to review and compare.  For example: we have exact dates for feed or turnout changes.  Our staff’s service does not begin and end during meal times.  Staff is working, sometimes very long days, from AM feeding to night check.  During this time they are topping off water buckets, delivering extra rations of hay, and turning on fans.  Every staff member is instructed to keep eyes and ears open at all times when surveying the barns throughout the day.  Their observations influence our routine and scheduling.  Thorough training here at POM as well as their previous education and experience has prevented accidents and facilitated advanced care.  Our staff is really in touch with the environment in the barns.  Everyone appreciates your diligence Erin H, Sarah H, Erin and Amber S, Lindsey G, Kelly C, and Katie G.

-Jackie is taking a short trip to FL from July 20th-23rd.  We can discuss schedules and plans prior to the trip and outline a program for each horse to stay in work during the trip.
-Val Frank of Bold Ventures is holding a Summer Camp from July 20th-24th.  The Camp will be conducted outside in decent weather.  In the case of poor weather the indoor arena will be used at 10:00am and 2:00PM only.  The indoor lessons should be small with no jumping.  If you have questions about scheduling your own riding or lessons during this time please let me know.
-Fecal Testing will be repeated on July 13th for all horses.  Current literature recommends testing horses 3-4 times per year during the heavy parasite breeding season which is spring-summer-fall. Remember that this procedure is limiting the cost and exposure of anti-parasite treatments and following the most current research for parasite control.  POM will collect samples and bring to lab.
-Bon Voyage to Kelly on her vacation this week.  Enjoy Kelly!
-Lesson Scheduling- please send Jackie your schedule each Sunday afternoon to be added to the program for the next week.
-Great news: Liz and Rasa are joining us for boarding in August.  We are excited to welcome them for boarding and training and look forward to making Woodvale feel like home.

Lots of little bits of amazing news:  With a small break in shows I have been busy planning!  I planned a few new events and there is more to come.  This week an installation professional will begin mounting our new industrial strength fans into both barns.  POM purchased high powered, closed engine fans which were designed for barns and dust and moisture.  In order to ensure safety we have also purchased extra long power cords to avoid using extension cords entirely.  Our barns will be circulating this week and prepared for the intense heat of July and August.  We have also invested in biologic pest control.  Fly Predators are enroute to help naturally decrease the number of flies on the farm.  Woodvale owners, Joe and Candace, were happy to team up for this initiative so will be working together to treat the whole farm!

We had big weekend at PVDA’s Ride For Life competition.  I will try to summarize the outcomes and take some time to explain the significance of these results.

Micah designed her own freestyle music and choreography working through our lessons over the past week and performed live for the first time on Saturday earning a solid score and clearly having a blast.  Both Int-1 tests showed excellent improvements from the last show.  Both horse and rider looked happy to work with one another.

Mimi balanced daily volunteer efforts for the PVDA Ride For Life Benefit Raffle with riding and managing Summer’s travel anxieties.  Summer stayed healthy all weekend which was a huge improvement from the last show.  The warm up environments were less busy which also seems to help.  Mimi’s ride on Sunday, particularly, showed improved accuracy and harmony.  I am very proud of this pair’s commitment to the challenges at Second Level and can see the more advanced work has become more attainable.

I have been able to achieve and share some amazing milestones during this very unique and special time of my life, my first pregnancy. For supporting me and our POM Team, I have so many people to thank. This season Kara Schoepp’s Herculeo H helped me to earn my final score for entry into the USDF “r” judges program, as a life long believer in education and a nerd at heart, I am looking forward to continuing my advancement in the judge program. Having trained Hercules while sharing the ride with Kara since Training Level, I am particularly proud to have earned my final 65% at Fourth Level with him. After 2.5 years in our training program with his owner, Linda Gloweinka’s, Fabuloso RC, has also advanced from Training Level to Third Level earning 64% and 66% this weekend at PVDA’s PVDA Ride for Life winning his class on Sunday. Fabby has become a phenomenal show horse and partner for Linda. In order to meet many goals with these horses and others, I have been fortunate to have the generous help of several other trainers over the years, particularly, Nicholas Fyffe, who we will continue to host at Woodvale. Our bench is thick with the most dedicated riders, supportive clients, and productive staff, I could ever imagine, thank you ladies!  Our horses have been maintained for competition and kept happy and healthy by Dr Cooper Williams, Dr Jim Yanchunis, Farrier Dean Geis, Farrier Sara Snyder, massage therapist Courtney Tesoro Molino. Both Herc and Fabby have been princess in the peas for saddles and are well fitted now thanks to Cate Fiolka and Theresa Keyes with Cate & Theresa - Custom Saddlery -Maryland. Ride Times LLC found the most perfect stretchy and comfortable Amino jacket which has seen me to 6 months in style. Adrienne Wisenberg put the beautiful logo created by Saucy Piaffe onto our POM clothing, proud to wear Pierre Renard. Friends from near and far have sent me the most heart felt and hysterical (really) advice about being pregnant and continuing to ride or work or just survive. Women are truly a heroic bunch! Perhaps the person who should come to the top of the list, my husband, Luke MacDonald, who has been willing to flex in anyway possible (including doing my laundry) to ensure our life and the business roll along smoothly. He is going to be an incredible father and I am so proud of him.

Mon May 25, 2015

It was good to receive a few updates from Erin and Micah during my weekend off.  I particularly enjoyed hearing about the POM wildlife trail ride in which you all spotted deer, cows, and a coyote.  Sounded like a blast.  Hopefully, you enjoyed your weekend with 2-legged family and friends as well as with your 4-legged friends.  We had a great time enjoying the perfect weather on our brand new patio which Luke recently completed.

I reflected on everything we, at POM, have accomplished and everything we plan to do.  Since November of 2009 POM has been gathering steam.  POM’s energy has accumulated knowledge, great people, and fabulous horses.  While I am constantly mulling over new ideas, improvements, and services, I am satisfied to have achieved a few very important goals which stem from a deeper philosophy.  Delivering on my holistic philosophy is very fulfilling.  I have to thank Woodvale’s owners, POM staff, and each of our customers and horses for this result.  Without your passion, communication, support, trust, and business, we couldn’t what we do.

Several people and horse professionals along the way instilled in me a reverence and respect for the horses in our care and training programs.  There is only one way to do a job or take care of another animal and that’s to do it to the best of our ability.  Since this transient level of quality may change with new technologies, feeds, and information, we are constantly seeking the best education and resources, while also taking the time to notice first hand whether the horses are actually happy and thriving.  Although, our job is never done, I know we are engaged in this process.

I always know when we are rolling into show season because instead of counting sheep at night I am reciting the arena letters!  We have two back-to-back weekends of learning.  My judge’s vocabulary is primed from spending two days with the amazing Janet Foy.  Not only did Janet make crucial corrections for each horse and rider, Training Level to GP, but she also used a few of my favorite dressage-isms.  Our audience numbers broke recent records at 155 for Saturday and over 40 on Sunday.  We stayed on time.  Lunch was delicious.  And we sold all 60 copies of Janet’s book with an hour long wait for a book signing over Saturday’s lunch.  Phew, I am glad it went so well and it’s over.

Weekly Newsletter

Mon Mar 09, 2015

This week’s weather certainly gives us something to be excited about.  As we prepare for spring, I would like to thank our staff for attending to every detail of the horse’s needs over the last few weeks while we experienced record temperature lows and two heavy snows.  Their daily efforts to keep the horse’s happy, warm, well fed, with fresh water, and on a steady routine, make it possible to move ahead with our program, asking our horses to give 100% every day in the training arena.  In addition, their caution and communication may have prevented accidents and illness.  The larger team at Woodvale which includes Joe, Candace, Mike, and Angel have managed a number of weather related equipment issues with admirable initiative and effort.  Finally, thanks to our costumers for your continued business and patience.  We have highlighted key aspects of the equipment and facilities, which overtime, we can improve to ensure that future winters at Woodvale will be as comfortable as possible.
