Dressage Training and Instruction in central Maryland

Dressage Bio
Jaclyn recently became a dynamic part of Maryland’s dressage community.  Already training, teaching, judging, and attending Potomac Valley Dressage Association board meetings here, Jaclyn moved from Princeton, NJ only 4 months ago.  With this move to Maryland, she brings her innovative training philosophy.  As an accomplished FEI rider who has received national and regional recognition on several horses that she trained up the levels, Jaclyn believes that with the right training program any horse can become a dressage horse.   Jaclyn has built her reputation by bringing new competitors to the ring through her systematic and patient approach, which helps riders connect with their horses and meet their riding goals.

Education - the scientific training method
Jaclyn did not follow the usual path to becoming an accomplished dressage trainer. After seven years riding toward the Medal Maclay in the hunter/jumper arena, Jaclyn took a break from competition. In 2003, she received a B.S. in Biochemistry from Northeastern University in Boston, MA.  During her time in Boston, she worked at Harvard Medical School and Millennium Pharmaceuticals while riding and teaching lessons part time.  Though most of this formal education does not have direct application in the saddle or barn, Jaclyn feels that the scientific methods and principles have helped her become a judge, design training and re-habilitation programs, teach riders, and manage the fitness and health of horses in her care.  Although science took a back seat to allow her pursue true passion in her full-time dressage career, Jaclyn derives many facets of her current training and care programming from her time in medical research.

Dressage Career
Jaclyn was able to devote full-time to her dressage career after she graduated from Northeastern University and began an apprenticeship with Grand Prix dressage trainer Beth Sproule-Hansen at Bellvale Dressage in Warwick, NY.  Here Jaclyn benefited greatly from Beth’s classical training background.  Daily riding and lunge lessons exposed her to horses at each level of the training scale and helped to perfect her position.  Jaclyn also had the opportunity to compete Bliss Simon’s, Finn McCool at second level.  In Warwick, Jaclyn developed an appreciation for for the art of dressage instruction by attending clinics by Debbie McDonald, Hardwick Burfiend, and Becky Langwost.

Through Beth's training and breeding operations, Jaclyn learned how to raise a top-level sport horse.  In addition to helping with stallion collection and foaling, Jaclyn was instrumental in preparing young stock for the Devon breed show and yearly foal inspections.  Jaclyn also helped prepare Beth's Oldenburg stallion, DiVinci, for CDI competitions, getting a taste for the full spectrum of dressage training and competition.

Shortly after moving from NY to Princeton, NJ, Jaclyn started training with “S” dressage judge, Heather Mason, at Flying Change Farm.  Heather was a superb mentor and greatly influenced Jaclyn's development.  Heather’s emphasis on the health and happiness of the horse had as much impact on Jaclyn’s professional conduct as Heather’s talent for training.  The physical and mental characteristics of each horse were taken into consideration when designing their ideal training program.  A recipe of jumping, trail riding, cavaletti, and long-lining helped to develop the potential in each horse, while keeping them happy and interested in work.  Having trained over a dozen horses to Grand Prix, Heather taught Jaclyn to introduce new movements and skills to the horses without pressure or stress, allowing them to find their confidence and making training fun.  Jaclyn’s many years training horses at Flying Change Farm, helped to mold her system of training.  This was a productive time for Jaclyn as she often competed ten horses each year at many different levels while balancing a training business, time at Flying Change Farm, buying and selling horses, and becoming a judge.

Judging Qualification and Continuing Education
In addition to her intense training and competition schedule Jaclyn finds time to pursue related certifications.  Jaclyn graduated from the USDF “L” Program for judges with distinction.  This intensive program required many hours of studying, scribing and sitting with “R” and “S” judges in order to prepare for 3 days of written and oral testing.  It is considered one of the most rigorous judge learning programs in the world.  Jaclyn has achieved 3 of the necessary riding scores to move up to the USDF “r” judge program and is looking forward to enrolling.

Jaclyn understands the importance of continuing education, and constantly seeks out the best trainers for guidance.  Over the past few years Jaclyn has had the opportunity to train with Scott Hassler- USET Young Horse Coach, Bent Jensen- Olympic Competitor, Betsy Steiner- WEG Competitor and Founder of Equilates, Lars Peterson- Olympic, World Cup, and WEG Competitor, and Axel Steiner- “O” Dressage Judge.  In addition, Jaclyn has attended the Yearly Edgar Hotz Judge’s Roundtable, USDF Collective Marks Seminar, Equilates Seminar, Anne Rawle Judge Training Seminar, Dressage to Music Seminar, and audited clinics by Stephen Peters, among other clinicians.
